City of Terril Issues Drinking Water Health Advisory Until Further Notice

Category: Local News

(Terril) – The city of Terril has issued a drinking water health advisory for its residents until further notice.

According to a press release, the city is experiencing high levels of manganese in their water supply, causing it to have a light pink color. This level is above the Environmental Protection Agency’s short-term health advisory of 1 mg/L (milligram per Liter).

City officials state that manganese is a naturally occurring element found in soil, water and air and is commonly found in certain foods we eat. However, too much manganese can increase the risk of health problems, particularly for infants under 6 months old. Infants are more at risk than older children and adults because their brains and bodies are quickly developing. Infants exposed to manganese over 0.3 mg/L may experience learning or behavioral problems.

Adults drinking water with high levels of manganese may experience impacts to their nervous system, resulting in behavioral changes and other nervous system effects, including slow and clumsy movements.

Terril city officials are asking residents not to drink the water at this time. Do not give tap water to infants, children or adults and use alternative sources of water, like bottled water. Residents are also being asked not to boil or freeze the tap water as this does not reduce manganese.

Adults and children of all ages can continue to bathe and shower, brush their teeth and wash clothes, food and dishes using the tap water.

At this time, city officials are unsure what caused an issue with the increased manganese levels. The city will be flushing hydrants and testing the manganese levels, and once levels are back to normal, residents will be notified. Samples have been taken to the lab and they anticipate resolving the problem as soon as possible.

If you have questions about your health from manganese exposure, discuss your concerns with your health provider.
