(Algona)--A Milford truck driver is facing multiple felony charges, including homicide by vehicle, stemming from an April crash that killed an Emmetsburg woman.
According to court records, 40-year-old Teddy Kutsch of Milford was driving a semitrailer southbound on 90th Avenue west of Algona on April 27th when the truck allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with an SUV traveling eastbound on 210th Street. The SUV’s driver, 47-year-old Carolee Wise of Emmetsburg, was killed in the crash. A 76-year-old front seat passenger in the SUV was seriously injured.
According to court documents, a cellphone in Kutsch’s possession opened Facebook at approximately 10:26 a.m., about 20 seconds before the first 911 call reporting the crash.
Kutsch was the only occupant of the truck and allegedly told officials he was not wearing a seat belt.
Kutsch was charged with homicide by vehicle-reckless driving, a class C felony, and serious injury by vehicle, a class D felony. He also faces misdemeanor charges of failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way and failure to maintain or use safety belts.
Kutsch has pleaded not guilty to all charges and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. He is currently free on bond.
The Iowa State Patrol initially listed Kutsch as being from Brule, Nebraska, but court documents filed after the crash report state he is from Milford.
