(Spencer)--The city of Spencer, in partnership with Spencer Main Street, has been awarded a Community Catalyst Building Remediation Grant by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
The grant will directly support the Main Street Second Floor Apartment Disaster Housing Grant Program, a strategic initiative designed to convert underutilized upper-story spaces into quality accessible residential units.
Spencer officials say the funding marks a significant milestone in the community’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and revitalize the downtown district following the historic flooding in June of 2024.
By integrating residential living into the historic district, the city anticipates increased foot traffic and consistent support for local businesses.
The city of Spencer is currently finalizing the project contracts with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and anticipates moving into the implementation phase shortly. Further updates regarding the application window for property owners and project timelines will be provided as they become available.
