(Estherville)--The City of Estherville is reminding all residents and visitors of local regulations regarding sidewalk safety in the central business district.

Under the Estherville Code of Ordinances, operating specified wheeled devices on downtown public sidewalks is prohibited to ensure pedestrian safety and accessibility.

It is unlawful to operate wheeled devices used for transportation or recreation on sidewalks within the central business district. This includes, but is not limited to: bicycles and e-bikes electric and kick scooters, skateboards, roller skates, and inline skates, toy vehicles and other personal micro-mobility devices.

Items exempt from the ordinance include mobility & assistive devices such as wheelchairs, motorized mobility devices, and walkers; child transportation including strollers, wagons, or other devices operated by caregivers to transport infants or small children and authorized equipment used for snow removal or construction.

Last week, the Estherville City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance creating a 10 mph speed limit for all wheeled devices on public sidewalks outside the central business district.
