Emmetsburg School Board Approves Purchase of Property for Proposed New Elementary School

(Emmetsburg)--The Emmetsburg Community School District Board of Directors has entered into an agreement to purchase property for a proposed new West Elementary School, contingent upon voter approval of the district's General Obligation Bond referendum on November 3, 2026.

According to a news release, the proposed site is located on College Drive, directly across from Iowa Lakes Community College, and would become the future home of the district's new elementary school when the bond referendum is approved by voters.

The news release says over the past year, the School Board has continued conversations with community members, listening to all perspectives while evaluating options for the future home of West Elementary School. Those discussions reinforced the importance of identifying a site that supports the district's long-term educational vision while reflecting community input. As a result, the Board entered into an agreement with the Kassel family to purchase the College Drive property, contingent upon voter approval of the bond referendum.

This will be the district’s third attempt to pass a bond referendum. In each of the past two years voters in the Emmetsburg School District have defeated a bond issue to build a new elementary school.
