Iowa DOT Announces New Monitoring Equipment at North Y Intersection

(Spencer)--The Iowa Department of Transportation says some additional enforcement and monitoring equipment is being installed this week at intersection of Highways 18 and 71, or the North Y in Spencer.

District 3 Engineer Jessica Felix says speed feedback trailers are being installed, in addition to the traffic cameras that are already present at the intersection. Felix says the additional equipment and law enforcement will remain in place prior to the construction of a roundabout. A bid letting for crossovers and a detour route for the project is set for this coming July with a letting for the roundabout itself set for October of this year.

The announcement follows the most recent serious accident at the North Y on April 16th involving a motorcycle being dragged under a semi. The driver of the motorcycle was seriously injured.
