High Winds Cause Damage at ILCC Farm

(Emmetsburg)--High winds which blew through Palo Alto County Wednesday afternoon damaged a portion of the Beef Technology facility at the Iowa Lakes Community College farm laboratory west of Emmetsburg.

Shortly after 2 p.m., strong winds knocked down the western section of the new building. The roof and beams from the west side of the building flew about 300 feet to the north, denting a grain bin. Heavy rain also fell during the storm period as well.

The 22,000 square foot building houses a heated section in the center of the facility which serves as a calving area. That section, along with the east side of the building, remain standing and are still usable.

No livestock were lost in the storm. Some cattle are being relocated to other portions of the farm lab.

Iowa Lakes President Val Newhouse thanked staff from several businesses as well as area farmers who responded rapidly to assist with caring for the animals and cleaning up debris.

The facility was dedicated this past August. It was designed based on the college’s desire to teach students using hands-on methods while incorporating the latest knowledge from industry.
